What does my yard have to do with anything?

8/15/2022 (Permalink)

If you have soil erosion around your home, stop and assess why this is occurring.  Has your neighbor changed the direction of their downspouts and the water is running into your yard?  Did you or your neighbor update landscaping or add or delete hardscaping that was in the yard?  What about structural changes to your home?  Did you put on an addition, repave your driveway, add a patio or porch? All or any of these enhancements, if not done properly, with the topography and drainage of the land in mind, could result in erosion.  On the surface, the erosion may not seem like that big of a deal, but there lies the issue……when you see erosion, it is not just on the surface.  It is deep down and potentially running into your foundation at a rate that cannot be deflected or absorbed by the adjacent soil.  So, before you pay for expensive foundation work that you might not need, check your lawn and the soil around your house for signs of erosion.  If found, figure out the source of the erosion and rectify the problem to see if that solves your issue.

However, if before your sleuthing figures this issue out, you have water seeping into your home, give SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly a call on (703) 830-5800.  We’ll come and dry you out before the damage is too great and mold sets in.

Where is the Sun!

3/3/2022 (Permalink)

Sunshine and blue skies are sometimes what we need to brighten our mood and to dry out a wet basement too!  We're slowly rolling into spring and with it come the snow melts and spring storms. Just when you think you're done with the slushy, wet, and cold snow, the spring downpours begin.

Take a bit of time in the spring to check your home after a harsh winter.  Are your downspouts working and still connected to the house?  Has your foundation held up through the winter months and your home is crack-free and more importantly, leak-free.  What condition is your roof?  Do you have a walk up basement entry and is the drain free of debris? These and many other check list items should be reviewed each spring to ensure your home stays as "water proof" as possible.

Should you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of water infiltration, give SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly a call on (703) 830-5800.  We're water remediaton experts and we're here to help.  So don't hesitate to call!

2/15/2022 (Permalink)

Between overflowing bathtubs, running toilets, and leaky shower stalls, it’s a wonder that bathrooms in our homes aren’t flooding with water every day!  How do we ensure this doesn’t happen?  Well, first of all, check all seals.  Make certain that calking is strong and in good condition, if shower tiles are cracked and/or loose, they need to be repaired before water gets behind them.  Check toilets for seals and properly working hardware and don’t leave the bathroom when you’re drawing a bath!  These simple and relatively quick checks and repairs can save a homeowner untold time, stress, and money in the future.

Unfortunately, nobody lives a completely charmed life, and eventually everyone experiences a bathroom water catastrophe.  When this time comes, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly (703) 830-5800.  We are here to meet your every emergency remediation need, and we answer our phone 24/7, 365 days a year.

  • Gutters should extend at least 10 feet from the foundation.

What Kind of Water Is Causing Problems in Your Home?

9/13/2021 (Permalink)

If you have questions, the IICRC Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration sets three categories of water that cause damage in buildings. They are summarized as follows:
Category 1 Water - Refers to a source of water that does not pose substantial threat to humans and classified as "Clean Water". Category 1 water may become contaminated if it mixes with soils or floor coverings, building assemblies, etc... Time and temperature can promote growth and amplification of microorganisms in water can cause Category 1 water to degrade.

Examples of category 1 water are: a broken water supply line (including the toilet), and tub or sink overflows.

Category 2 Water - Refers to a source of water that contains a significant degree of chemical, biological or physical contaminants.  These contaminants can cause discomfort or sickness when exposed or consumed. This water type carries micro organisms and is nicknamed "Gray water."

Examples of category 2 water are:  toilet bowls with urine (no feces), sump pump failures, dishwasher water discharge, and washing machine water discharge.

Category 3 Water - Nicknamed "Black Water" and are grossly unsanitary. These indoor water sources  contain unsanitary agents, harmful bacteria and fungi, causing severe discomfort or sickness.

Examples of type 3 water are:  water sources from sewage, seawater, stream or river water, ground surface water or standing water.

Category 2 Water that is not promptly removed and remained stagnant may be re classified as Category 3 Water. Toilet back-ups that originate from beyond the toilet trap is considered black water contamination regardless of visible content or color.

Knowing the classification of your water may help you understand personal safety concerns and the necessary material and debris removal anticipated. Think of the water category related to the amount of "natural fertilizer" that will help feed and grow mold.

Call SERVPRO of Burke Clifton Fairfax Station if you find yourself dealing with any of these water categories.  We can be reached 24/7 on: 703-250-6300.

Water Ruining Your Floors?

3/30/2021 (Permalink)

We are often asked by our customers how they can determine if they have water damage to their floors.  In actuality, that answer is very simple.  If your home has experienced flooding to any degree, caused by Mother Nature, or by a leaky toilet or broken pipe, you may have damage to your flooring.  If there is damage, you will be able to spot it fairly easily.  If the floor is wood or tile, inspect for cracked, raised, or warped flooring.  Carpet may show areas of buckling, soft areas and may have a musty/mold-like odor.

In any of these cases, DIY attempts are probably not your best option. Professional grade equipment and expertise is needed to get your home or office back to pre-water damage condition.  So, give your local SERVPRO professional at Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly SERVPRO a call on (703) 830-5800 and we will be able to assess your needs and remedy the situation.

Why is Water Getting Into Your Home?

10/5/2020 (Permalink)

After months of wildfires, the west coast of the United States would love to be deluged with rain.  If only we could wish the overabundance of rain in one part of the country to shift to the other part of the nation, everyone would be better served!  Unfortunately, such powers are not something we possess.  So, quickly addressing any overabundance of rainwater which may play havoc with your property, is of utmost importance.  If your basement is wet after a hard rain or water has creeped in under doorways or windows, don’t simply mop the water up and forget that it happened.  Putting your head in the sand like an ostrich is not the answer.  Look and try to figure out why the water is coming into the house.  Are the seals around the doors and windows worn and in need of new weather stripping?  Maybe someone simply didn’t close the doors or windows properly.  Or, perhaps you cannot tell why the water has come into your home.

Should you need help cleaning up the water, and determining the source and reason for the intrusion of water, call SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly today on (703) 830-5800.  We are water remediation specialists and can help inspect your home to determine why you are experiencing the problems with water leakage.  Put your mind at ease and give us a call today.  We’re here to help!

Is It Fall Storms Gone Crazy Or Just Poor Drainage?

10/1/2020 (Permalink)

That wet musty corner of your basement... is it because of all the rain or could it have been prevented?  The fall is a great time to do, as the Australians say, "a walk-about" on your property.  Over time, erosion can cause what looks like mini-Grand Canyons running down the slopping areas of your yard.  If this occurs, often times water builds and penetrates into your home, rather than running off and away from the structure.  Once the water gets in, the dampness, musty smelling situations begins to build.  Many homeowners we've dealt with immediately fear that their foundation or structure of their house is cracked or damaged in some way.  They cringe at the thought of the large expense facing them.  In many, many, cases, this in fact is not the situation and by simply regrading the yard, or running downspout extenders away from the structure, the problem is quickly solved.

So, take a few minutes and walk about your property.  Check the soil, the grading, your gutters, and downspouts to make sure any water from rain or snow will be adequately taken care of.  Nobody wants a wet and musty home!

Should you find yourself a bit late on this chore, and the water has already entered your house, give SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly a call today on (703) 830-5800.  We're here to help!

Summer Rain

8/11/2020 (Permalink)

If you find yourself underwater or overwhelmed with water damage, do not stress, call SERVPRO today.  The summer storms just don’t seem to want to go away and the rain and hail keep falling.  Lawns are soggy, gutters are overflowing, and water is making its way into buildings and homes.  If the flow of water is not stopped and the entry point of the water repaired, mold may be just around the corner!  Don’t let the summer rains get you down, and don’t ignore such problems if they exist.  In the summer, it’s easy to think the hot sunny weather will return, and will dry everything up.  But that is not always the case.  Small water leaks can easily turn into big, expensive issues if disregarded and put off.  Let us get you cleaned up and dried out. Call SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly today on (703) 830-5800.  We’ll be there faster than the rain that’s falling!

Is Your Sprinkler Watering the Inside of Your House?

8/10/2020 (Permalink)

Are you loving your new sprinkler system?  Enjoying the extra time you have to read a book on the back porch, rather than dragging your hose all around the house, watering the flowers, plants, and lawn on a hot summer day?  Sounds good and most of the time it will be good…….but, beware of the leaky sprinkler pipes!  Each summer we receive numerous calls from homeowners that have water leaking into their homes for no apparent reason.  There has not been a storm, a pipe has not broken, the washing machine has not overflowed, yet they have water in their basement and can’t figure out why.  The first question we then ask, is whether they have an underground sprinkler system.  If you have a sprinkler system at your home, make sure to adhere to the guidelines of an annual system check by the sprinkler installation company.  They will come out and check and test your system and are able to detect if the system is operating properly or perhaps has sprung a leak.  Preventative maintenance is the best, and usually cheapest, type of maintenance.  But, should you find yourself with a leaking sprinkler system, which created a wet house, give SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly a call on (703) 830-5800 and we’ll get you dry and comfortable again in no time!

My Washing Machine Did What?

8/10/2020 (Permalink)

Here is a bit of homeowner advice…..do not leave your house with your washing machine going! A recent water remediation job turned into not only a water job but a finished basement rebuild because of a faulty washing machine.  Hours and hours went by with the washer overflowing with water due to a faulty cut-off switch.  The faulty switch signaled to the washer that the wash tank was not filled with water, thus the continual flow of water into the washing machine.  Eventually the water had nowhere to go but out the top and onto the floor.  Inches of water were later found by the homeowner upon their return home.  The carpet and padding were soaked, the walls had absorbed water several feet up, insulation was soaked, the furniture was soaked and swollen from absorbing the water.  In simple terms, the finished basement was a mess!  SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly was able to remediate the damage and get the homeowners back to normal.  “Like it never even happened.”

Should you experience water damage in your home, give us a call on (703) 830-5800 and we will be there to assist.

How Many Times Have You Raked Leaves this Season?

3/2/2020 (Permalink)

Did you forget to check the outside drains for leaves?  Do you now have water in your home?  Fall and winter can be a pretty time of year but those leaves can also wreak havoc.  You rake them up once and think you're done, but two weeks later, there they are again!

If you find yourself under water, call SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly.  We are committed to providing 24/7 water damage remediation should the need arise.  We're available 24/7 at 703-830-5800.

As the leaves continue to appear, take steps to prevent water from getting inside your home.

Check all of your exterior drainage systems:

  • Are your gutters free from leaves and debris?  Leaves and debris can clog gutters and drains and send water back to your roof, walls or foundation.
  • Check the drains in exterior stairwells. Make sure they are clear of leaves and debris. You can install a raised drain cover from most home improvement centers that will protect you from an inch or two of debris.
  • Gutters should extend at least 10 feet from the foundation.

If you find that after doing all that you can to curtail the water, it still makes its way inside your home, give us a call.  We'll be there in a flash it help you out!

Convenience or Headache?

10/8/2019 (Permalink)

Typically, homeowners love their sprinkler systems.  No more ungainly hoses to roll in and out every time the lawn needs watering. No more broken sprinkler heads or twisted hoses lying about the garage.  Just set the automatic timer and forget that you even have a sprinkler system......that is until it leaks and creates problems far more cumbersome then rolling up a twisted hose! Leaks in sprinkler systems are not uncommon and can cause water to seep inside the foundation of your home.  This water, if undetected, can result in damage to floors, carpets, walls, furniture, as well as the onset of mold.

So, enjoy the ease and efficiency of your sprinkler system, just be sure to have it checked and serviced annually to reduce your risk of any malfunctions which may result in water damage.

If water damage does occur, be sure to call in your SERVPRO professionals at SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly on (703) 830-5800.  We answer your call 24/7.

Don't Let Fall Leaves Take You Down the Drain

Are leaves starting to pile up around your outside drains?  They look pretty on the trees and fluttering down in the sky, but they can cause real damage if they clog drains and cause your home to flood. SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly is committed to provide 24/7 water damage remediation should the need arise.  We're available 24/7 at 703-830-5800.

As the leaves start falling this season, take steps to prevent water from getting inside your home.

  • Buy a "witches cap" drain cover that allows water to escape if the surrounding area is covered with leaves/debris.

Are Waterfalls Entering Your Home!

10/4/2018 (Permalink)

Sometimes It Seems As If It's Never-Ending!

Are you having one of those weeks where it is storm, after storm, after storm? Are you feeling like a cartoon character bailing out your ship with a lone bucket?  Wet carpet and soaked walls can end up being more than just water damage if not immediately remediated.  Water soaked walls usually equates to water soaked insultation and possibly water soaked electrical outlets.  Wallboard up to the waterline should be removed, insulation dried or replaced, and electrical outlets dried and tested for system integrity.  If not cared for in this manner, the growth of mold is an almost guarantee.  So act quickly so this secondary damage does not take hold.

Should your home be deluged with what seems like never-ending waterfalls, call SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly for immediate assistance.  We can be reached 24/7 on (703) 830-5800.

Sprinkler Systems: Friend or Foe?

9/11/2018 (Permalink)

If water damage does occur, be sure to call in your SERVPRO professionals.

Did This Water Damage My Floors?

9/4/2018 (Permalink)

We are often asked by our customers how they can determine if they have water damage to their floors.  In actuality, that answer is very simple.  If your home has experienced flooding to any degree, caused by Mother Nature, or by a leaky toilet or broken pipe, you may have damage to your flooring.  If there is damage, you will be able to spot it fairly easily.  If the floor is wood or tile, inpect for cracked, raised, or warped flooring. Look for buckling and gaps between wooden boards. Carpet may show areas of buckling, soft areas and may have a musty/mold-like odor.

In any of these cases, give your local SERVPRO professional a call and we will be able to assess your needs and remedy the situation.

“Pain in the Drain”……Fall Leaves Fit the Bill

8/30/2018 (Permalink)

Don't Let a Full Gutter Pull You Down

With autumn right around the corner, don’t forget to keep drains free of fall foliage.  A "witches’ cap" drain cover is a great solution for helping to keep drains from becoming completely blocked.  Homes with walk-up basements are especially susceptible to flooding when drains are covered with leaves; resulting in standing water that inevitably flows inside the home.   Another leaf trap is downspouts and gutters.  Clogged gutters can result in overflowing water, which runs down the house, rather than inside the downspouts.  Saturation of this nature can result in moisture wicking inside the home and establishing a breeding ground for mold. Typically, this water also stains wallboard and can get inside electrical wiring and outlets.

So save yourself the pain of water damage by keeping your yard, drains, and gutters, free of fall leaves.

Clean versus Dirty Water and what are the Implications?

3/26/2018 (Permalink)

Water can change categories over time.

IICRC Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration sets three categories of water that cause damage in buildings.

Examples of catagory 2 water are:  toilet bowls with urine (no feces), sump pump failures, dishwasher water discharge, and washing machine water discharge.
